Join us for conversation with Dr. Az (he/they), board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and co-founder of Peacock Mental Health, an affirming mental health clinic rooted in radical inclusivity and built by and for the neurodiverse and queer community. Alongside his business and life partner AJ del Pino — whose background in business and community development complements Dr. Az’s clinical expertise — the two created a practice where every detail reflects care, dignity, and difference.
Peacock Mental Health was founded in 2022, the same year Dr. Az publicly came out as bisexual and was diagnosed with ADHD. At the time, he struggled to find care that truly affirmed his neuroqueer identity. After leaving one position and being let go from another due to misalignment with organizational values, he began queering every aspect of the clinical model — ultimately designing a practice that celebrates those who have often felt overlooked or misunderstood by the traditional mental health system.
Peacock specializes in the treatment of ADHD, trauma, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and gender dysphoria, offering gender-affirming surgery assessments and ketamine-assisted therapy, including a specialized Spravato treatment center. Known for its patient-focused approach, the clinic provides longer appointment times as a standard — a direct contrast to industry trends focused on volume. Here, success is measured not by the number of patients seen per day, but by the outcomes and experiences of each individual served.
As an expert in culturally competent and affirming psychiatric care, Dr. Az has been sought out to develop educational content for healthcare practitioners, lead LGBTQ+ workshops for nurse practitioner students at the University of Arizona, and serve as a panelist for the university’s LGBTQ+ Health Symposium. He has also led trainings at Southwest LoveFest and currently serves as a national speaker for Johnson & Johnson, presenting on the treatment of major depression in LGBTQIA+ adults.
