Over the past month, we have seen a spike in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation introduced at the state level, and advocacy organizations expect that trend to continue. So we will be welcoming Jude Simons & Tina Whitley from Arizona non-profit Civic Engagement Beyond Voting to help our community learn how to get involved to defend ourselves--without having to take a bunch of time to do it! They will cover the reasons to get involved in our state politics and how to register for and use the state legislature's Request to Speak system, which is the most direct way to have your voice heard in the state capitol. Inclusive business is good business. And our businesses work best when our people aren't under attack. Together we can protect our community.
About Request to Speak: Weigh in on bills from the comfort of your couch! Arizona’s Request to Speak (RTS) is an online tool that lets everyday citizens give Arizona state lawmakers our feedback on bills. It’s an easy way to get involved in state politics, stay informed on the bills that directly affect us, and make sure our elected officials honor the wishes of us, their constituents. It’s basically Facebook for legislators – use a thumbs up/thumbs down to tell them your thoughts on a bill. Reporters and legislators read your comments and use them in committee hearings and even on Twitter! Getting registered for the RTS system typically requires an in-person visit to the capitol, but CEBV has got you covered. Find out more at breakfast!
About Our Speakers
Judy Simons (Sigh-muns): retired teacher, 33 years in Mesa Public Schools, who came to realize how important it is to pay attention to what our AZ Legislature does or fails to do. Now that I have the time, I volunteer with organizations like Civic Engagement Beyond Voting to raise that awareness & hopefully involve others in improving life in AZ.
Tina Whitley (Wit-lee): born in Tucson and grew up in Scottsdale. I lived for 30 years outside of Munich, Germany as a teacher for students with learning disabilities at the Munich International School Middle School. We moved back to AZ in 2015. I joined Indivisible in 2016, and have been active with CEBV since 2020.
